What is Meow-Jong?

Meow-Jong is a single-player mahjong solitaire game with cat pictures on the tiles. You pick a board layout, find two free tiles with the same picture, remove them, and keep going until the board is clear. It is made and published by EPWH LLC in Rhode Island, USA. The Steam edition first released on November 3, 2016.

Is Meow-Jong real mahjong?

No. Meow-Jong is mahjong solitaire (also called Shanghai or tile matching), a one-player puzzle that uses mahjong-style tiles. It is not the four-player table game with hands, melds and scoring against opponents. There is no multiplayer.

What platforms is Meow-Jong on, and what does it cost?

Steam sells the desktop edition for Windows, macOS and Linux; the US list price is $4.99 and Steam runs seasonal discounts (store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/535910/MeowJong/). The itch.io desktop edition includes DRM-free Windows, macOS and Linux downloads plus a Steam key for $4.99 (https://epwhesq.itch.io/meow-jong). The iOS edition, listed as "Meow-Jong: Cat Mahjong", is a free download on the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meow-jong/id1031437777). There is no Android edition at the moment.

Does the Steam version have ads or in-app purchases?

No. The Steam edition is a one-time purchase with no ads and no in-app purchases. The iOS edition is free and shows rewarded ads, with optional in-app purchases of coins.

How many boards does Meow-Jong have?

The itch.io desktop release 3.2.2 includes 160 boards. The free browser demo includes one Classic Turtle board. Steam and iOS releases may differ; check their store listings for the current version. Board sizes range from 28 to 160 tiles; the classic Turtle layout has 144 tiles.

Are Meow-Jong boards always solvable?

Yes, every board is dealt solvable. The game places tiles by reverse construction: it repeatedly picks two free positions, pairs them, and removes them, so the finished deal always has at least one complete solution. You can still get stuck by matching in an order that buries a needed tile; undo, hint and reshuffle are there for that. Purely random deals are a different story: see our study, Is mahjong solitaire always solvable?

How do tiles match in Meow-Jong?

Two tiles match when they show the same cat picture. There are 44 pictures. A tile can be played when nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its long sides (left or right) is open. Meow-Jong does not use the flower and season groups found in traditional mahjong sets.

Is there a timer or lives?

There is no countdown that ends the game and no lives. A clock and a score are shown while you play, and your time counts toward the score when you finish a board.

Does Meow-Jong run on Steam Deck?

A native Linux build is listed on Steam, and Valve has not given the game a Deck Verified rating. One Steam reviewer wrote in May 2024 that it "Runs well on the Steam Deck!" We have not tested it on Steam Deck ourselves.

Does Meow-Jong have Steam achievements or trading cards?

Yes. The Steam store page lists Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards and Family Sharing for the game.

Is Meow-Jong suitable for children?

The iOS edition carries Apple's 4+ age rating. There is no violence, no text chat and no multiplayer. The Steam edition contains no mature content. Parents should know the iOS edition shows ads and offers optional in-app purchases.
